Who is the Client

A US-based manufacturer of semiconductor processing equipment used in silicon wafer processing, with an annual sale of approx. $10B.

The Challenge

The client heavily invested in SAP Business Planning and Consolidation (BPC), SAP Business Warehouse (BW), and SAP BusinessObjects (BOBJ) for financial data aggregation and analytics to enable informed decision making. They also invested in Qlik technology for data analytics and visualization, hoping to get more significant insights. However, these massive investments in information management and analytics were going in vain as they did not get them the expected benefits.

The client’s executives struggled with the inaccuracy of the data reporting and analytics presented to them, which they received after a long delay. These factors combined; they were forced to make faulty decisions based on unreliable data.

A technology assessment conducted by a large consulting firm at the client’s workplace identified analytics as strategic to the client’s future growth. However, the evaluation did not provide an actionable plan to deliver the analytics. The client was looking for a long-term partner who could create a roadmap to implement analytics as a strategic platform for their organization.

The Solution

GSPANN conducted a strategic maturity assessment of the client’s information analytics ecosystem to form an actionable roadmap. In addition to the strategy, GSPANN defined analytics KPIs, organization evolution, business process, data governance, platform, and architecture direction within an implementable measurable roadmap. The engagement started with cross-functional stakeholder interviews that captured common organizational pain points, business capabilities gaps, and aspirations.

Our experts also developed an analytics platform evaluation matrix to understand the existing data and analytics technologies' details. The matrix revealed the gaps of the existing platforms, enabling us to identify the platforms' preparedness to support the current and future-state requirement.

We interviewed fourteen business units and over fifty stakeholders to understand the data and analytics capability gaps in the system compared to the industry peers, and how and where the information is captured, analyzed, and consumed. This complete understanding of the business, the organization, and its technology from an analytics point-of-view provided the foundation to create the analytics maturity model.

Business Impact

  • The roadmap provided a business case, cost, duration, and organization impact analysis for each implementation stage.
  • The executed roadmap removed the reliance on the "tribal knowledge" found with the internal subject-matter experts and replaced it with consistent and standard analytics.
  • Before the engagement, each department had a siloed view of their practice, data, and requirements. The roadmap delivered a systemic perspective to the client.
